Just because we are in a whole pandemic, doesn’t mean we should slack in the fashion department. Oh, no ladies, we can never relax on looking good. Instead, we’re going to make sure that we keep up with the latest fashion trends. In fact, now is the ideal time to work on our closets and this season’s fashion trends cannot be missed out on. We did our research and found some gems that are suitable for every Zimbabwean woman. Here is our top 10 list of what to wear this year.
Vintage-inspired clothes are here to stay and this item will have us looking stylish for every season of this year. With an 80s style oversized boyfriend blazer, you create a long line silhouette and play with shapes. Shoulder pads will help cinch in the waist and elongate the legs. This style will be perfect with straight-leg trousers or jeans, biker shorts or leather pants. In summer, pair it with a bodysuit and string heels for a casual but classy look. For winter, rock this jacket with a turtleneck, skinny leg jeans and high knee boots. #slaying. You can easily dress this up or down for an effortlessly chic aesthetic.
We love headscarves for those bad hair days, protecting our hair and as finishing touches to our outfits. The headscarf is playing a major part in this year’s fashion trends by taking a trip back to the 50s and 60s. Choose from a silky design with floral motifs or intricate patterns, or keep it simple with bold colours and block letters. Styles that are popular this season are wrapping the fabric under your chin in a loose knot or switch things up by hanging it off the back of your head or wrapping it around the neck or dangling from your bag.
*Top tip. Don’t mind the pun. Turn the silk headscarf into a top for a modern and trendy look.
Pastel tones have been hot this year in fashion. Perfect for summer and our beautiful melanin skin, sorbet pastel tones will have every woman looking stylish. Try these with baby-doll dresses, slick suits, rouched dresses and pussy-bow blouses. Our go to colour palettes: Mint green; the rosy, blush, pale pinks; soft orange; icy blue; yellow and soft lavender. Feel free to mix these pastels to create fun and playful outfits.
Want to channel your inner runway model and fashionista? Purchase a yellow bag as a pop of colour to any outfit. This trend is easy to replicate and is timeless. Our friends from Trendspotter suggest choosing a small clutch to spice up an outfit or a mustard tote for any daily needs. With numerous shades to choose from, these yellow bags will look incredible when paired with other vibrant hues or a monochromatic ensemble.
1960s is that you? We cannot wait to look groovy baby in these classic go go dancers inspired items of footwear. Inspired by the 1960s funk era, the white knee high boot is a chic way to elevate any look. Pair it with a patterned mini dress or skirt, a roll neck or funky leggings. These can be worn casually or fancy but still making us look crisp!
One can never go wrong with neutrals. This year we will be dabbling mostly in yellow and camel tones. Still on the vintage tip, these colours were trendy in the 1970s and have come back to grace us. As a modern twist, mix and match these colour tones to create an elevated dimension and depth to your outfits. Try light brown suits or coats with mustard turtlenecks for the cooler months or sleek tan T-shirts and a camel pair of flare pants. Mustard and brown are a hot combo for this season and we will be rocking it any chance we get.
Tassels are making a big statement this season especially on our bags. Whether as long or short fringing, this over the top design is sure to turn heads. Fringe bags can be worn in any season and at any event. Think of a classy cocktail with a black or brown fringe bag, or something more daring in red or yellow. There is no way we are not getting one of these babies because statements are what we are all about making!
Picture big-shouldered 80s style sleeves adorned with oversized ruffles. This is the look for the season. Make a statement in balloon sleeves, flared, exaggerated puff sleeves for a little romanticism, relaxed off-the-shoulder styles and oversized bell-shapes. This trend will accommodate every budget and we love it. It is a trend that will take us from day to night and we cannot get over how versatile it is.
Still sticking to the 80s, retro sneakers are making a comeback and have been trending everywhere. With the gummy tread soles and neutral suede fabrics, we are guaranteed to be up to date with the latest ‘IT’ look in a pair of these sneakers.
Seen last year on runways but making a bolder statement this year is the strappy heel. Marie Claire tells us that this new iteration involves more intricate strapping with some wrapping up and around the ankle for an elevated take on the trend. Best worn by tying the straps over your pants or in their square-toe sandals form with toe separators, this trend promises simplicity, ease of wear and comfort without compromising on aesthetic. Try these out in the following silhouettes: Kitten heels, funky toes, cool flats, and lace-up, barely there.
No pandemic will make us slack on our style this year and we are guaranteed to have a successful year in fashion as all of these trends are going to leave us looking like the fashionistas we truly are. We love the colour palettes and vintage styles dominating this year and cannot wait to see these different looks on our Divas Inc fam.
