We also learn about our shero’s inspirational journey and how she manages to balance her busy schedule…
Before I ventured into hairstyling I was enrolled at Chinhoyi University of Technology studying for a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. From a young age I had always been fascinated with art in its different forms, whether it was poetry, sculpturing, music, drawing and even hairstyling. Doing hair is another expression of art so I think it is safe to say I am on the right trajectory.
I love my family because of the sense of belonging and community that I have with them. I will always be a sister, daughter, niece and aunty before being a hairstylist. All the work that I do is motivated by ensuring that I am an integral member of my family so I always make time for both work and family. It is not an easy balance, but I do try to make it work the best way I can. There will always be room for improvement which I constantly work on.
The pandemic hit us all. I have learnt that you cannot always anticipate a storm but you can choose how you respond to it. It has not been easy. I have had to change the way I operate and find new streams of income. Sometimes, it’s not always about working hard but working smart. Fortunately, I have found ways to work around some of the difficulties of the pandemic.
This is the time I utilise for relaxing, rejuvenating my energy, spending time with family and catching up with friends.
What the COVID pandemic has taught me is that nothing is certain. I am keeping my cards close to my chest and lips sealed. All I can say for now is, watch the space!
Straight back jumbo cornrows. They are quick and simple but very classy.
I have found something that I am passionate about. I guess I am one of the blessed ones who get paid for doing what they love. My entrepreneurship journey has brought me boundless freedom – I choose how I manage my time and where I work, and it has given me financial freedom as well.
As women, our road to emancipation has been hard and winding. It always breaks my heart when I hear of women who have to choose between having a career and a family. Entrepreneurship can be a bridge which allows us women to have the best of both worlds. Independence is invaluable!
Please do not get Sangita micro-twists. They are just time consuming and taxing on the hands.
For those who say any market is saturated and cannot be penetrated, they are sadly mistaken and need to take a few notes from Julie Samkange’s life; a woman who has changed the Zimbabwean hairstyling industry and continues to leave us in awe with her ceaseless growth and numerous projects. We continue to celebrate Zimbabwean women dominating in their industries and setting strong examples for those wishing to become trailblazers as well. As an entrepreneur in the hair world, Julie has shown us that success is possible if you remain consistent, hard-working and passionate about what we do.
