What is a woman? A mother, a sister, a friend, a daughter, an aunt, a colleague, a classmate, a daughter/sister in law, the list is endless. Women execute these different roles with so much grace. Before a woman tells you exactly what she is going through, you can never guess and this a strength only women possess. For centuries women have always been treated as the inferior sex, the term, ‘It’s a mans’ world’ is no longer used as much as it was in the past but it still lives. There are days when a woman doesn’t need anyone telling her that it is a Mans’ world but the Actions towards her speak so loud she knows it in her heart. The campaign to reach full equity and equality is ongoing and today we celebrate women internationally.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. It commemorates the movement for the Rights of Women.

Women’s Day was first held and celebrated on the 28th of February 1909 in New York in a move to appreciate and acknowledge the role of women in society, to take into consideration their many roles and their importance. In 1910, the International Woman’s Conference suggested the 8th of March to be an “International Woman’s Day.” After women gained suffrage in 1917 in Soviet Russia, 8 March became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
